Ballynahinch U14 took to the Ravenhill pitch as underdogs having previously lost to the Monaghan boys in the Armagh tournament final earlier in the season.
However, when the game got underway Luc Bonnargent and his side quickly settled into the game and began to press the Monaghan boys into defence. Ross Maxwell and Ross Johnston kept the Hinch pack moving forward with Bonnargent, Gareth Gill and James Tougher carrying the ball well an early score looked to be on the cards.
The breakthrough came in the 15th minute when hooker Corey Potts burst his way over for the opening score. Bonnargent failed to convert from out wide.
Monaghan were visibly shocked by this set back and began to move the ball wide in an attempt to get back into the game. They came up against a very determined Hinch defence the County Down boys keeping the Monaghan men out with some thundering tackles which helped turn the ball over on several occasions.
The score remained 5 - 0 at half time

The Hinch started the second half very strongly with Luc Bonnargent leading from the front, a true inspiration to his side.
Indeed it was Bonnargent who struck again for the Hinch side when he converted a penalty goal in the 62nd minute to take the Hinch beyond a converted try.
As the game drifted into the final quarter the Monaghan boys fought back well and began to take control. The Hinch defence was stretched wide on several occasions then eventually Monaghan burst trough to score under the posts for a converted try.
The Hinch side now led by a single point and to their credit they once again lifted their game and managed to keep the Monaghan side out during the final 7 minutes.
This was an impressive and well deserved victory and both sides deserve great credit for providing a very entertaining and competitive final, the Hinch boys deserving their victory on the day. |
