Seconds Out Of Junior Cup |

Ballynahinch suffered their heaviest defeat of the season in this Junior Cup quarter-final. They had no answer to the constant forward power of the Ballymoney men who were a size bigger than their courageous opponents. All four trys came through the dominance of the pack as the hinch struggled to clear their lines.
Playing against the wind in the first half, the hinch soon found themselves seven points down when big second row Hanna caught cleanly at the lineout and was driven over by the pack. From the restart, Ballynahinch went on the attack. Mark McCormick, Alan Dickson and Pete Glass worked their way up the right wing. Glass eventually crossed the line, but referee Teddy Slane judged that the ball had not been grounded.
Ballymoney used the wind intelligently and their probing kicks pinned the hinch in their 22 for long periods. The visitors were penalised at a ruck in front of their posts. Full-back James McClenaghan converted.
On a limited supply of quality possession, hinch moved the ball when they could against their Qualifying League One opponents. Alan Dickson crossed the try line for Ballynahinch. But for the second time, the referee could not see that the ball had been grounded. James Gillespie was then prevented from scoring by an excellent tackle. Following that, Mark McCormick had a difficult chance when Gillespie made the opening. The ball came to him hard and low, McCormick could only knock-on in a valiant attempt to gather with the line in his sights. |

The remainder of the first half was played out near the Ballynahinch line, with the home team's forwards asking all the questions. The pressure paid off for Ballymoney with scrum half Scott nipping in beside the posts. McClenaghan converted to leave the halftime score 17-0.
With the wind on their backs, hinch were desperate for an early second half score. A shoulder charge by Niall McBriar earned him a yellow card and hinch were temporarily reduced to fourteen men. Ballymoney effectively sealed the win at that stage, with Hanna barging over for a brace of trys under the post.
The hinch then rang the changes. Ian Wallace and Oran Fletcher replaced Toby Mannus and James McBriar who had been suffering with a bug all afternoon. It was no surprise when big No 8 Andy Graham scored again for Ballymoney. McClenaghan converted to complete a miserable day at the office for Ballynahinch.
The doom and gloom of the day was quickly forgotten later that evening at the club's Gala Awards dinner at the Downpatrick Cricket club. Testimony of the quality of this seconds team was born out as three players collected major trophies on the evening. Toby Mannus won the Under 20's player of the year, James McBriar was awarded the young player, and Lloyd Jones the second team player of the year. Congratulations to them and their teammates.
