Fives Avenge League Defeat
Colin Rea reports from Ballymacarn Park
Ballynahinch 5thXV 49pts - Ballymoney 3rdXV 15pts

After a few weeks break due to weather and no fixtures the fives were eager to get the rust off the old bones. Hinch were expecting a tough encounter after a hard fought loss up at Ballymoney earlier on in the year.

A full strength team was an unexpected luxury for captain Colin Rea. Conditions were good but a stiff breeze down the pitch meant that there was a definite advantage in winning the toss. Hinch lost and still got to play into the wind in the first half and with a big pack as usual Hinch knew it would not be an easy day. From the kick off the physicality was apparent with big hits from the Ballymoney pack and Hinch responded through some of their own.

The first score of the game came from good work at lineout and good hands in the backs lead to an indiscretion by the Money pack gave returning out half Mike Bell the chance in front of the post on the 22. Slotted for an early 3-0 lead that unfortunately did not last long a questionable overlap developed that lead to a Ballymoney try under the sticks converted and a penalty a couple of minutes later meant with 20 minutes gone Money held a 10-3 lead.

The Hinch pack putting good pressure on the Ballymoney scrum and disrupting virtually every lineout meant that it was not a fluent game but the broken play more than suited the home side and after a turn over in the Hinch half the ball was spun wide to find full back Ben Wilson who used his pace to beat two cover tacklers and dummied a third to score a great individual try. The try converted and followed by another by Ben and a Ballymoney penalty meant that the half time score was 15-15.

Hinch knew from earlier in the season that Money were capable of keeping the ball for long periods of time but with the wind at their backs the advantage at scrum and line out should tell and so it was with out half Bell and box kicking from scrum half Knox Money found themselves camped deep in their own half.

After serious pressure on the Ballymoney line for a couple of minutes Knox skipped through the defence to dot down for an important score which was quickly followed up by an Andy Edgar try left Hinch felling that they were on their way to a good win and so it turned out when Thurgate charged down a clearance kick, collected and scored.

This was followed by a solo effort by Bell who danced between Money defenders to score under the posts untouched. The final act of the game was the completing of a superb game by full back Wilson with his hat trick tries the conversion missed left the final score at 49-15. A superb effort by the pack meant that the backs had a great day and with seven tries were able to make the most of great turnovers and set up play by the pack.

Good performances all over and with a huge Forster cup game at home to Inishowen next week captain Colin Rea is hoping for a repeat performance to challenge the men from Donegal. Team:  Wilson, Thurgate, Edgar, Reid, McDowell, Bell, Knox, Browne, Hanna, Clifford, McCord, Smith, Gibson, Gordon, and Rea(C).
